Theraputic Parenting Support

Do you find that the more you use time out, reward charts or punishments, the more your child’s behaviour worsens? Don’t worry, you are not alone! In fact, a whole heap of research now informs us that traditional, behavioural correction methods do not work for children with additional or complex needs but can in fact make their behaviour worse.

Therapeutic parenting offers an alternative, more appropriate approach. It is a nurturing parenting style developed from consistent, empathetic, insightful connected responses to a child's distress and behaviours.

During therapeutic consultation, I will help parents (or carers) to looks deeper into their child’s behaviour. Parents will begin to understand why traditional parenting methods do not work and develop more appropriate strategies instead. This approach fosters the feelings of safety and connectiveness. Attachment bonds are strengthened, and family dynamics become more positive and rewarding.

Therapeutic parenting sessions usually take place at my private practice, but I can travel to the family home when appropriate.

How many therapeutic parenting sessions are required?

I suggest that we start with a commitment of six sessions and review together as we go.  Each session lasts for 1.5 hours.

What we do together :)

During a series of therapeutic parenting sessions, we would:

spend some time exploring recent events and challenging behaviours

Learn ways to respond to your child that promotes your relationship, meets their needs, and settles behaviour.

Identify your own triggers and feelings and consider your own self-care and support needs.

Consider what your child’s behaviour is communicating.

Learn about the 'PACE' approach to parenting which encourages playfulness, acceptance, curiosity, and empathy.
