Play Therapy Sessions

what happens in a play therapy session?

Each child is given permission to express themselves in whatever way feels natural and comfortable to them during their Play Therapy session. This may be via drawing and painting, clay, stories (including creative visualisations), sand tray and miniatures, puppetry, role play, poetry, movement, or music.

How long is a play therapy session and how many are required?

Each session lasts for 40 minutes and is held at the same time and place each week. Sessions usually take place at my private practice, or within the child’s school.   A minimum of 12 sessions are required, however when a child’s problems have persisted for a long time or are complicated, a longer-term intervention may be required.

I liaise with parent/s and/or referrer throughout the process to discuss the child’s progress, any continuing concerns and to share resources and/or strategies that I feel will be beneficial. Specific details of the session are not discussed as this is private and confidential to the child, and it is important that the child's trust is maintained within the therapeutic relationship. An update report is offered around mid-therapy, and a full report is provided once the therapy is completed
